I had a recollection ..of being probably 10 years old in the 70s …and I was the only one in the living room and the phone rang. It was a man or it could’ve been a young man. I don’t know. I’ve never known.
He told me I’d won swimwear through our Montgomery Wards in town. I was beyond excited. It’s kind of like those young girls being told that they could be models. At that age, we are vulnerable and can get roped in.
The guy on the phone said he had to ask me questions about sizes and my favorite colors. It was about the fifth question that was absolutely inappropriate that I said ..who is this? He had a wicked laugh and he hung up. That haunted me until I was at least 12. We owned a store so anytime a customer would come in the store. I would always wonder ..could it have been him.
Now listen to this. Because of my embarrassment, I never told anybody ..not even my girlfriends. Not even my Mom. 4 1/2 decades later, I’m sharing it with all of you as an example of how vulnerable young girls are. A lot of the women that are part of this program already understand this and probably have some of their own experiences.
It was not my fault. No more than it was these young girls fault for thinking they were going to have a modeling career or a massage therapy career …And it’s difficult to say no …at those young ages when things are happening that you know are not ok. We at a young age still have trust that the adults around us have our best interests at heart. We do not have the mechanisms to deal with people that are trying to abuse us at those ages.
