Today’s convo reminded me of quote from an incredibly powerful speech RFK Sr. gave in 1966 that I always refer back to. It feels especially relevant right now 😕

"Think how our world would look to a visitor from another planet as he crossed the continents. He would find great cities and knowledge able to create enormous abundance... He would witness exploration into understanding of the entire physical universe... He would see billions of people separated by only a few hours of flight... sharing a common dependence on a thin layer of soil and a covering of air.

Yet he would also observe that most of mankind was living in misery and hunger, that some of the inhabitants of this tiny, crowded globe were killing others, and that a few patches of land were pointing huge instruments of death and war at others. Since what he was seeing proved our intelligence, he would only wonder at our sanity.

It is this monstrous absurdity—that in the midst of such possibility, men should hate and kill and oppress one another—that must be the target of the modern American revolution."

Thanks Ryan and Jim, and special thanks to Judge Luttig for sharing his many years of expertise, knowledge, and insight with us. Judge Luttig's first Substack piece, "The Self-Evident Truths of Freedom—and of Tyranny," makes clear to all of us that "in America the law is king."

No question we're in a crisis right now in this country, but it's some comfort to know that those who have come before us and have been here before have overcome the tyranny of lawless power-mongers. So, too, shall we.

Everything sucks. A new outrage every day. I have stage 4 breast cancer that has spread to my liver and bones. On ACA and very afraid. Also worried about everyone else. It seems we never win. Trump will interfere with the midterms. He surrounded himself with corrupt people. Can anyone expect fair elections when these disgusting, soulless people are in control? Especially of the military

Lynn, I'm sorry about your breast cancer and that it has metastasized. I hope your treatment is working for you. I'm sending prayers that all goes well for you. May your road to recovery be strong.

It is an obvious bribe. It is so disgusting. Even more obvious he needs to be kicked out but so many people are busy stuffing money into their pockets that they don't care to uphold the law. Our country is broken.

Loved your closing remarks, Jim. I totally agree the so called 'mainstream media' is horseshit. I had my cable TV disconnected 2 years ago. I gave my TV to my Granddaughter last year. My only source of news now is Substack, I started with Robert Reich's column and have added Dr Heather Cox Richardson, Joyce Vance, Dan Rather, Dr, Timothy Snyder, Jim Acosta, Don Lemon. Dr. Paul Krugman, Vincent Graham, Tom Cleaver, and a few others since. So, I now get a balanced news, honest news, and I'm not paying much more than I did when I had Newspaper Subscriptions and TV cable. Plus I have the fun of writing my own column, and commenting on all those I subscribe to. So here's to Independent Media, and screw Corporate Media.

I don't understand how a news organization and in this case two of them, can justify turning over our freedom of the press to a Dictator who is taking away our Democracy and replacing it with Fascism. How important can a merger possibly be to do this? In my opinion, they're committing Treason by taking away our 1st. Amendment rights and if nothing else, total disregard to our Constitution. For myself, I will cease watching either CBS or ABC and hope more of us will do the same. It worked with Tesla and can work here also. Just don't watch. See how many of the sponsors like that and how long they'll be around with no audience.

Thank you Jim! I may not always get a chance to watch live but I so appreciate being able to log in later and watch!! I don't want to miss any of your great guests or your own perspectives! We don't get to hear from many of these great intellectuals on mainstream in detail like we can here- sooo important at this time in our history.

Judge Luttig's message is eloquent but for whom is it written? Even though I have a graduate level degree, I had trouble figuring out his message. We are in a devastating constitutional crisis put there by artfully hoodwinked voters who didn't understand what they were voting for. Those voters, who are critical to saving our democracy, are unlikely to be aware of the judge's essay, and if they do find it, they won't understand it. We urgently need to reach them. How do we do it?
